Doublet

of the Italian Renaissance

Period: around 1400, Italy

This fencing jacket of the Italian Renaissance has been custom-made for a reenactment group from England.

As a basis for our creations served Pandolfo Malatesta III's doublet (1370-1427), whose fragments are on exhibition in the museum Civico of Fano (Italy). Based on the exhibited original cuttings and numerous paintings we reconstructed the complete design.

The top was overall enforced and padded, whereby the chest was shaped with cushioning. The lacing on the back allows for more ease of movement, for example during horse riding. The tight-fitting sleeves are also laced to leave the forearms more room as well. The overall rigorous impression is emphasized by the added black ribbons and the high, button-through standing collar.
