Venetian dress

for Early Music

Vorderansicht

Period: 1560/70, Italy

The following dress has been commissioned work for the Danish soprano singer Anna Maria Wietød. If you are interested in watching a small report about our atelier by the NDR and 3sat, head to our'About us' page. It includes among others the origin story of this dress.

We have crafted this robe from hand-made silk (cutwork) underlaid with plain-colored silk. The superstition of both fabrics leads to (light) refractions within the transparent part of the cutwork, which create a distinct depth effect: the dress appears to be shining from the inside. Metal appliqués ornamented with 'rubies' intensify this effect. The overall stage presence of this dress is further increased through gold-colored Venetian lace, which we used for collar and cuffs.

The exposing décolletage is distinctive of Italian dresses from the 16th century. The already stiffened bodice was additionally furnished with a removable wooden busk (flat, rounded wooden strip).
The Tudor corset has been crafted based on an original cut. Below the barrel-shaped skirt is complemented by a hip roll.
