Robe czarina

Maria Feodorovna

Period: around 1780, Russia

This robe à la francaise of light red silk was crafted based on a painting by Alexander Roslin depicting czarina Maria Feodorovna. The design and realization took an original cut from the second half of the 18th century as basis. The top was crafted on a linen bodice that is laced at the back to ensure the perfect fitting of the manteau .

The glamorous floral garnish was made from pure silk, which was specifically made for this dress by one of the most notable European artificial flower manufactures; each one was sewn on by hand. The silver tulle was patinated in numerous work stages. The fine lace of the sleeves was color-coordinated to the greatest possible extent.

The headgear, stiffened and beaded with pearls, is adorned with four ostrich feathers, which were nuanced and color-coordinated in multiple coloring processes. Worn below the Rococo dress: a chemise trimmed with antique French lace, a large pannier and a Rococo corset with hand-sewn eyelets.

The suit was commissioned work for a masquerade ball at castle Engers.
