stinging nettle and silk

Period: Middle Ages, 13th - 14th century

The following wedding dresses demonstrate very well that plain clothing can all the more be festive if noble materials are combined with sophisticated cuts and beautiful flower arrangements.

This medieval bridal dress has been made of linden green silk organza. It is cut as a single piece. The width of the skirt is realized through small gores, i.e. triangular fabric pieces. All eyelets for lacing the dress at the back were made by hand. The accompanying belt was also hand-embroidered with pearls and metal threads.

The second dress has the same cut but is made of stinging nettle fabric. The belt woven through with gold thread and the hand-sewn eyelets for the lace-up back are the dress' only adornments and give it a very unobtrusive look. The magnificent floral wreath and bouquet on the other hand stage this ensemble all the more.

The third dress is also made of stinging nettle fabric and uses the same basic cut as well. Similarly the lace-up back eyelets were sewn by hand.
